Choosing a domain name for your website

Choosing a domain name for your business can be tricky.

If you already have a business name and brand then it makes sense to use that.

Until recently having keywords in your domain name significantly helped to rank your site well in search engine results. But as more people realised this a rush was made to register exact keyword domain names. These sites would then get to the top of the search results beating other websites that had better content but not as good a name. For this reason the significance of keywords in the domain name has been reduced by the search engine companies because they want to return results that are most useful to their users not just those that have the best name.

However it may still be worth having a keyword in your domain name if it will help your user. For example, if your business is targeting a specific area say Leeds or Yorkshire you might want to add the location to the name: my-business-leeds.co.uk or my-site-yorkshire..org.uk. Then people finding your site say from Scotland won't waste anyone's' time thinking you also operate there.

If you are a business in the UK then it makes sense to have UK country code. The search engines, not surprisingly, associate country codes with the countries they represent. There may be a temptation to use an alternative country code for the novelty factor like fix.it but .it is the country code for italy so while it may be good for branding it may not be good for SEO (search engine optimisation).

There are some TLDs (top level domains - the code or codes at the end of the domain name) that aren't associated with any particular country and are seen as global. These include:

• .com for companies
• .net for network providers (originally)
• .org for not for profit organizations
• .info for websites providing information
• .io originally for islands in the Indian Ocean, but there are so few of those and it has been taken up by so many other companies that Google, for example, now considers this a global TLD

If your business is international then one of these TLDs may be more appropriate.

Cost of your website domain name

We will register your domain for free for the first two years for £5 domains and one year for all the others (except those over £20). After this time you will have to bear the cost of the renewal, which will occur on a yearly or two yearly basis. The costs are listed in the table below.
