Being In A Dark Room And Looking For A Black Cat

Being In A Dark Room And Looking For A Black Cat

Philosophy is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat. Metaphysics is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat that isn't there. Theology is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat that isn't there, and shouting "I found it!" Science is like being in a dark room and looking for the black cat with a torch

Having New Eyes

"The real voyage of discovery consists of not seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." - Marcel Proust Onsitenow's philosophy is that of a voyage of discovery. We need to see your website design through the eyes of your customers. Our aim is to chart out the landscape that that leads to increased sales for your business.

Leverage

Leverage

With a lever you can move a really heavy object A longer lever gives you greater power. The internet is a lever for influence, it's the longest lever in history. It is possible for one person to reach millions of others. The opportunity to use leverage is open to everybody.

What You Know And Don't Know

What You Know And Don't Know

Blogging makes you realise that there are many different ways to say things, and if you say things in many different ways, you find new facets on the subject and idea. At school we were always told to write things in your own words, I found that so hard, mainly because we were writing about books, so it was a lot easier to just copy it verbatim out of the book, after all they already expressed it very well, in fact better than you could. But now I realise the power of using my own words because it teaches me what I know and what I don't know.

The Flexibility Of MODX

The Flexibility Of MODX

Blogging with MODX (the content management system that this website uses) is a joy because you have so much flexibility with what you do with your content, and how you blog it. For example I started this series of posts off as a regular blog, I was going to post every day as 100 blog posts in 100 days challenge, but I found I just don't have the time to write something substantial for each post on such a regular basis. So now these posts are all pre written and programmed to be published on the appropriate days. But because they are quite insubstantial they are all designated with a noindex HTML meta tag so Google doesn't construe them as auto generated thin content.

Planting The Seeds Of An Idea

Planting The Seeds Of An Idea

You really can create a whole blog post from just writing down one sentence of an idea. At first the sentence might appear quite unpromising but as you try and elaborate and flesh it out, you find that it expands like a dividing cell, or a blossoming flower. Or, when you get sick of trying to write a substantial blog every day, you can just paste that one sentence in and be satisfied with that! Done is the new perfect.

Blogging Is Where Technology Meets Marketing

Blogging Is Where Technology Meets Marketing

Blogging is where technology meets marketing. So you'd better get blogging.

Consumer vs Producer

Consumer vs Producer

The one real benefit of having done the 100 blog posts in 100 days challenge is having changed my mindset of being a consumer to one of being a producer (even if it is now of blogs only consisting of a sentence or two) Being a producer has much more chance of leading to success.

How To Get Links To Your Website

How To Get Links To Your Website

Content marketing should be your link building strategy

Three Things You Should Always Have

Three Things You Should Always Have

In many things you should always have 1) a call to action 2) an incentive 3) a deadline But it probably applies more to sales than dating.

The Curse Of Knowledge

The Curse Of Knowledge

What's the curse of knowledge? It's using jargon instead of language that a client understands. Eg a sales pitch to a band: "I'm going to market you" The problem with that is it has connotations of selling out being sleazy. It would be much better to say: "I can get you more paid gigs" It's an easy trap to fall into when you are a web developer. Here at Onsitenow we try and speak in plain English, and if you don't understand anything we say, please, please let us know.

How To Win

"You can out last those that are lucky, and out work those that are lazy"

Fertilizer

Fertilizer

You can take crap and turn it into fertilizer.

Learn From You Customers - Fast

Learn From You Customers - Fast

"The ability to learn faster from customers is the essential competative advantage that startups must posses" If you are a small company you can act quicker, pivot faster, so when that useful feedback comes, take the initiative.

Never Argue With A Fool

Never Argue With A Fool

There's a Spanish proverb: "When someone argues with a fool, it is hard to tell the difference." I like that.

You Are What You Publish

You Are What You Publish

"On the web you are what you publish" Not sure what that makes me, as I'm going for regularity at the expense of quality, at the moment. As I have said many times before, I need to rethink this 100 posts in 100 days challenge.

An experiment in blogging

This is an experiment to see what effect posting a blog post every day for 100 days will have on this website's Google ranking.

If you would like to receive a full search engine optimisation (SEO) report on the results of this experiment and the techniques I used at the end of 100 days then leave your email in the form below.
